  1. You can buy a good mobile phone in HK at USD150. You can also buy prepaid SIM cards at HKD100 (USD12).

If you are moving to Japan or Korea. They are using different mobile networks so better consult your provider if you can go roaming in those countries.

  2. Usually you don´t need to do anything as it will be done automatically by your phone (provider). Usually (that´s at least the idea behind) it is be done by roaming.

But most o the times it is much more cheap to by a local simcard and - if your mobile phone is sim locked - to by another mobile phone. Especially in Hong Kong you should get a cheap one for less than $ 10 or maybe an iphone clone for little money (with the money you safe).

For the sim card if a long term visa is needed (I only know requirements from Thailand and Cambodia but for sure it is similar) just ask somebody to buy a sim card in its name. If Hong Kong offers tourist sim cards, check the prices with the regular sim cards before.

From Thailand i.e. you can call many hours for little money to overseas. So it makes sense and maybe you´ll get a nice new mobile for the saved money ;)

  3. Ask your cell phone provider

  4. Yes you probably will need to call. Only certain models of phones can be used overseas. You will most likely have to get a different sim chip also in order to do so. And yes you can rent a phone for a month or so but it costs around $100.
