  1. The first answer might seem sort of smart-a--, but it's actually correct.  You can enter on one-way ticket, but you will need proof of onward travel outside of Italy within 90 days.  A bus or train ticket to Lugano would technically suffice, because Switzerland is not part of the Schengen Agreement border group.

    If you have legal residence in the EU or a Schengen country, either for work or study for example, or European passport, then you can enter on a one-way ticket without having to provide proof of onward travel within 90 days.

  3. I have flown to Italy several times and not once have they asked to see a ticket. Afterall, everything is e-tickets these days anyway...

    You will have no trouble.
