I'm fairly new at golf, i got a 17 piece set of Acuity clubs for my birthday in october, and i like them, and when i watch the pros golf, it seems like every shot they take with an Iron they have a divot close to where the ball just was, my problem is i never have those divots, i am kind of consistant with my irons, and completely terrible off of the tee with the woods and driver, but with my 9-Iron and PW i am pretty consistant, even though i get no divot. Do i need to change my swing to where i get a divot, if so, how, or is my swing fine the way it is?

FYI, i shoot in the 100-120's, im just a beginner though, and im getting better

  1. If the ball fly good and straight, then don't.

  2. Eventually you will start taking divots I wouldn't focus on that right now just work on your fundamentals and the divots will come. When I first started I didn't take any divots, now I' m a 13 handicap I shoot consistant 80's and depending on the shot you want to hit equals the size of the divot. Pick up Ben Hogan's five fundamentals of golf and read it and practice on the fundamentals and have fun.

  3. don't change the one thing that works

just line up with your hips toward the target and your head behind the ball then try to keep them that way through the swing

    you will get better quickly

  4. as long as you are making good contact then it doesnt matter

  5. Divots large and small alike are decided by the lowest point of your swing and how you release the club. When the lowest point of your swing is lower than the level your ball lies a.k.a. "post-contact" with the ball you take a divot. When you talk about divots and shots where you want to "take a divot" you are talking about putting backspin on the ball. This is used normally when you want to flight the ball to carry an obstacle or distance but you dont want the ball to keep rolling forward once it lands (ie. landing on an island green, or between two bunkers, or the top tier of a two tier green). Once the ball lands, the backspin will make the ball stop. Sometimes when the backspin is at a high rate your ball will retrieve. This is useful to to give yourself a good next shot/putt. However if you shoot in the 100s-120s it might be a better idea to get a feel for making solid contact and consistent straight shots and gather the feeling of releasing the club. Once you can consistently make solid contact with your shots, then try and dabble in the art of putting spin on the ball. But if you really can't resist getting into some mean divots and wild spins check out golflink.com and go to thier online tutorial videos.

  6. you dont need to get a divot (but it helps with back spin) but if you hold the club higher up the handle it eill help, if your doing this then you may be too upright. aim for the back of the ball this also helps, ref the woods its a diffetent swing plane you need  a lower swing plane and sweep the ball rather than hit down (for woods only) hope this helps
