  1. It is a point of honor that a kilt is worn at all,

especially if one doesn't have undergarments!  ;)

Seriously, though, the simplest thing to do

is ask the head of the clan in question.

    However, given the aforementioned "honor",

be aware that wearing one clan's kilt at a social function

where folks believe you to be of a different clan,

could put a wee bit o'tar on the haggis, if you catch my drift!

And, next time, ask the clan elder(s) before buying!

  2. Very good question. I think you can get the true answer by researching some Scottish ancestry sites. There's a wealth of information online if you phrase your questions properly.

Good luck. I'm trying to track down my ancestry, which is supposedly Scottish.... but I'm not having much luck.

  3. The tartan (the pattern of the different designs of the thread in the material) distinguishes the branch of a particular clan.

Each generation would change the original tartan, slightly, to identify themselves at large gatherings.

If a man had 7 sons, there would be 7 versions of the father's original tartan, without losing their father's main identifying design.

Think of it as a primitive form of wearing a name tag.

Until you know which branch of the Scott family tree you are directly descended from, you can't be certain you have the correct tartan.

  4. I see why not.You are a descendant of the Scott line thus Scot clan.My g-g grandmother is a Scott she married a Walters but we wear the Scot tartan.

There are not rules and regulation on wearing tartans.
