  1. You will be able to go to Japan, but you will be utterly confused whenever encountering the Japanese language. You will be unable to carry on a conversation that goes beyond those set phrases (And they quickly do).

Any Japanese writing will be incomprehensible to you. I'm assuming that you have not learned the japanese writing systems (hiragana, katakana, and kanji). So you will not be able to glean any information from menus, signs, etc.

You should take the time to learn the language, not just set phrases. This includes the writing system. That way you can carry on conversations, understand speech, and be able to read an write.

I'm not saying that you have to be fluent in Japanese, but a basic knowledge of the language is preferable.

There are of course lots of people in Japan that speak English, but then what's the point of going to Japan? :)

  2. If you are going only for a short period and to a large city or an area where they are use to having foreigners visit, you'll be fine.  As already mentioned, most people know at least some English, and unlike some other countries that shall remain nameless, people are very helpful even if you don't speak any Japanese.  Having said that, you should try to at least learn hiragana and katakana.  It will help you out alot in terms of getting around if you can at least read some of the signs. Also , for the words you do know, make sure your pronunciation is good; because Japanese is phonetic language, a slightly mispronounced word can be very confusing.

    Good luck!

BTW: leave me alone is hotte oite, shut up is urusai.

tasukete is only used for an emergency. otherwise, use tetsudatte kudasai.

  3. Chances are you'll find many people who speak some english...don't let not knowing a language fluently stop you from traveling, that's where you'll learn to speak it!

  4. If you speak English, you'll be fine.  Of course, by speaking (or trying to) Japanese, shows certain gratitude to the host.

If not, most police on the street (if not most people) can understand some (written) English...

    good luck

    yamete can also be "yamero"

    why is "nande"

my name is ciera is actually "watashi no namae wa ciera desu. you can't say watashi wa namae wa ciera desu KA because it's like saying MY NAME IS CIERA? or IS MY NAME CIERA?

when KA is added, it makes the statement a question.

matte can also be "chotto" or "chotto matte kurasai"

    here are more:

hajimemashite - how do you do

    oyasuminasai - good night

    konnichiwa - gud afternoon

    konbawa - gud evening

    Ja, mata - see you

    o-namae wa - what's ur name

dozo yoroshiku- nice to meet you

try learning how to read and write hiragana and katakana. if you CAN, try kanji too. and watch lots of animes with subtitles, it can help you learn more.

  6. If a person came to you and only knew these words in English, would you consider it to be sufficient?

No. It's not nearly sufficient. But if you're just going for 2 weeks as a tourist, what else are you going to do? You can't be expected to know the language of every country you visit.
