Im 6ft, 210 pounds of muscle. And quite fit, i feel im not heavy enough. Im strong but when faced with a 240 pound+ prop i dont stand much of a chance other than wrapping my arms round there legs. Should i try out some of the "backs" positions? I fancy trying winger as im quite fast aswell?

Thanks

  1. 210lbs is definately heavy enough to play flanker.

  2. i only weigh ten more pounds than you and play flanker/ number 8 (or any position to be true) im shorter though at 5' 9 "

the weight is not that important. for a great flanker youve got to be mobile and youve got to be a great tackler.  regardless of who is coming at you on the rugby field, proper form in tackling them will always bring them down. nobody can run with a 210 pound anchor on thier feet. NOBODY.

so tackle low, get up quickly and recover the ball. i dont know what kind of tackle you are, but if you really want to be successful at turning over the ball you want to end up on top of the tacklee and be in a better position to get and steal it.

not all tackles have to be "brain lima spinal readjustments." its more important to win the ball than put a hurting on the other player, although if that player is a trash talker im trying to rearrange his universe rather than recover the ball.

i think you have the perfect build and size for flanker.

  3. The try answer to any player questioning there size in rugby is this, "no matter the size and speed of any player therer ankles are always small".  People get caught up on size being the motivation to becoming the best, personally its winning the battle of your own mind that will determine your success.  Good luck.

  4. Since you mentioned speed and size, I would recommend Inside Centre or Outside Centre. Of course that requires good handling, passing, and endurance. If you have played flanker then the defense part of Centre should be no problem.

And depending on your group (high school, college, club...) I would venture to say that you would get far more chances to show off that speed if you were a centre than if you were a wing.

  5. you'd make a fine strong side flanker at any level, you could stand to gain some muscle weight but that'll come in time...don't rule yourself out of any position though, go where a coach needs you that you think you'll fit, learn whatever position he needs you in and if another coach needs you elsewhere you still know the fundimentals of the game and can switch easily...

  6. i'd say you'd be fine at that weight

i'm going for Flanker or Lock for the new season and i'm nearly 6'3" and 195lbs

i've only ever been a scrum half or fullback before, and i think i'll make the transition fine with my height and weight, so you should be fine

    Edit:

i'm 20 mate... when September comes it will be my 3rd season on the University team, but i've been playing club rugby since i was 7
