i need to put a quote in for my report. however, i can't remember how i am supposed to space it.

here is my paragraph:

This novel starts out inferring that a tragedy has occurred; Blair is narrating to start off. She quotes, to an unknown person, "I wish we could have hung out with you before all this... Maybe I should sit next to you instead of across from you. It'll probably be easier if we don't look at each other. No, I mean, I can look at you, but you shouldn't move your head like that in your neck brace."

am i supposed to put like a paragraph space where I am writing it, because it is sort of long? If so, then where do I continue writing? Or am I correct this way?

  1. It looks all right.  However, the correct word is implying, not inferring.

  2. I hope you don't mind if I do a complete correction as I see it.<tis old school '92>

This novel starts out inferring that a tragedy has occurred. The main character, Blair, is self narrating. She quotes,"I wish we could have hung out together before all of this... maybe I should sit next to you instead of across from you. It'll probably be easier if we don't look at each other," she muses. "No, I mean I can look at you, but you shouldn't move your head like that in your neck brace." Blair smiles to herself.

Okay the only thing i cant remember if a quote is the " or ' . Putting blair at the end ties the sentences together as a quote.

  3. The passage is long enough that you could use a block quote.  At this length, I'd call it a suggestion rather than a requirement.  If you do, you start writing again at the next paragraph.

I can't show you what a block quote looks like here, but you can check the link below.

The novel doesn't infer, it implies.  When you read it, you infer.

Blair isn't quoting.  She's speaking her own thoughts in her own words.

If you block quote, introduce the quote with a colon.

The novel begins with the implication that a tragedy has occurred.  Blair says to some unknown person:
