  1. College is a lot of fun first of all, second if your in college your old enough that your parents can't tell you what to do.  College is a great place to figure out what you want to do.

  2. I waited two years after graduating to get into college. It might not be normal for some who have everything planned out but that doesn't mean that you have to know right now. Everyone figures things out at a speed that is right for them.  You have no idea how many people changes their majors once they go through a year or two in college.

And as far as not knowing how to do it all, there are people who do. They can help you and it won't be nearly as hard as you think it is.

You can go in January with an undecided major and just work your way up from there when you figure out what is right for you.

  3. Yes this is normal. I am 25 years old and I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I was told to get past this to take the "basic" classes in college, you know, the math, english, etc. that one would have to take no matter what major you decided upon. Then once you are there, maybe you will get inspired to go in one direction or another. One thing I do advise against, is waiting too long to go to college. I, too, said that I would wait a semester before going... one semester turned into a year, which turned into 2, which turned into 5, which turned into 7. I still haven't gone, and I wish sooooo much that I would have gone right out of high school. Even though I haven't really decided on anything for a major (still!) I still wish that I would have gone and gotten some extra education under my belt. It is a proven fact that people that go to college make more money than people who don't. And that alone should be a good enough reason to go, even if you don't know what you are going for. That extra money could pay for your trips to travel and feed the children... just an idea.

Good Luck... and DANG IT! go to college! :-)

  4. Maybe there are people you could talk to about it, like maybe at the counselor's office (if you have your heart set on going to school)   or, maybe there are people you could talk to about starting your own business.... maybe you could get some sort of business grant to start your own business... think about what you love to do, figure out how to do that thing and work for yourself.

  5. When I was in college I graduated with a degree in English without having a clue of what I wanted to do.  The truth is that it's hard getting out of high school and figuring out what you want in your life when you feel like you haven't experienced anything yet.  If you want to feed the children or change the world then maybe political science is for you.  There are plenty of people I know that have a college degree and are doing things that are not in their major.  I for one have a English degree but work in the pharmaceutical industry.  The truth is just having a degree can open doors for you.  I assure you that I don't know one person who graduated from college and regretted it!  Since you have some time off, may I suggest taking the on line career test.  Also think of some things you are interested in and do some research.  Even visit some of the places or the actual workforce and interview people.  I knew someone that went through law school and hated being a lawyer.  Now she is a teacher and is happy!

As for signing up your best bet is to go to an open house (which schools have all year long) and talk to an advisor that can help you. You can call the admissions or career development department of the school/s you are interested in. You can still get your feet wet, as you are required to take some basic courses before you get to even pick your major.  Don't worry I assure you that you are not alone!  Good luck!

  6. i just started my freshman year..and i have no idea what i want to do. I went undeclared, that way i can just take all the core classes and the school will help me figure out what i want to do. This is actually better because most kids change their major, so they take all those classes for nothing.

  7. Given that the most common major for college freshmen is "undecided" or "undeclared", you are certainly not alone.  In fact, I was responsible for talking with the undecided students at my school at orientation last weekend, and when I got there, there were 14 students in the room who were not on my list.  It turns out that they had actually randomly signed up for a major, but really had no idea what they wanted to study.

While your dreams are admirable, I can understand your parents' restrictions, because while college is an investment in your future income, traveling around the world to feed hungry children would just be a sunk cost, and they probably are not willing to throw their money away.

It is probably NOT a good idea to do nothing, though.  To register for school at a community college, you just have to go there and find the Admissions office, and they will help you sign up.  If you want to register for a 4-year college, it is a little more complicated, but you can find all the information you need online on the colleges' websites.

  8. Firstly- Don't worry your self, relax, and your future's doors will swing open in your face, you just need to open them.

Secondly- think. what do you LOVE to do? when your bored, what's the first thing you want to go and do? Musical? arty? mathematical?

Hope that helps a bit, maybe gives you some clues, hints..

just remember, relax! life is no hurry!

    :]

  9. It is sooooooo normal to not know what you want to be.  You are not alone.  Most people cling to plans because they're scared of uncertain situations.  I started college because it seemed like what I was required to do.  I graduated this year, and I still don't know what I want to do with my life.

  10. Actually, I'm 20 and I just recently found out that my childhood dream wasn't my dream career anymore. And I was working towards that goal, like I was in the actual program.

Some people in university have two years left before finishing and they're not sure if they still want to do that.

People can have a change of heart ten times before being on the right path. Some people it takes them till they're 25!

My teacher once told the whole class "if you can, go backpacking for 6 months, go to africa, save the world, and well as for i i found out what I wanted to study in the middle of the mountains" something like that anyhow. now she's taking economics the understand and trying to make some changes. there's some programs out there for you.  do some research on the programs the college offers. you might just find something.

  11. Keep in mind that there is nothing REALLY forcing you to go to college (your parents are, but you could always rebel or something).

But it's a good idea to go and take a lot of different classes and try to figure out what you want to do.  Ideally, you want to be going to college and learning something that you are going to use.  But it should take at least a year to figure that out.

You should also keep in mind that having a college degree (BA) is important to get accepted to a lot of decent jobs nowadays, though.

  12. I 100% understand you. I am starting my 1st day of college tomorrow and I am soo scared..I really don't want to go but of course my parents are making me. I have no idea what I want to be; we are 1 in the same ;)

hey let me know when you find out lol

  13. i dont think its normal.. most people start deciding their career in grade school

    good luck ..

  14. if you wait till january, youll only get to take 2nd semester. You should turn in applications before december so you can take college this year.

And i am like you... dont know what i want to be...

  15. I am 37 and just figured out what I want to do when I grow up.  NOt everyone knows right away and that is ok.  You whoever do need to start.  Take basic classes like eng 101 or math 101 they are just basic classes which every moajor is going to require.  Try the JR college it is less stressful and and cheaper.  Take only one or two classes at a time.

Wanting to feel the hungry is a wonderful way to give of your life but the majority of the people that can do that have a degree in humanity or political science or something else.  Good luck

ps I am in college for the 3rd time and will finally grad in Nov.
