heres the thing, im a good iceskater and my coach wants me to start competing in competitions, however, i feel that compared to the other skaters my body type is too big. Im very active...off ice training, yoga, pilates, karate and weight training but even this doesnt seem to shift the fat from my arms, my thighs and my tummy. im 5"2.5 and i weigh 9 stone 8. Do you think that image is important when competing? please help

  1. No way!  Anybody can compete -- all ages, sizes and shapes.  If you love skating, do it for you!  I'm not sure what "9 stone 8" means, but you sound pretty athletic.  Do what makes you happiest!  Remember, you're not doing it for anyone else but you.  Who cares what the others think -- most of them you'll never have to see again.....and when you're getting a medal and they're not....it doesn't matter what they have to say. :)

  2. h**l no :) u can still compete!

you sound very strong, keep in mind that muscle weights way more than fat. and with all that exercise you do there's no doubt you must be fit yea?

unfortunately there's a lot of pressure on skaters to be thin remember image isn't everything, people should be watching you skate, not gossiping about how you look! as long as you are comfortable with your abilities then don't worry, go out there and show them what you can do! :D

i used to feel really self conscious about myself when wearing my dress. I'm about 60 something kg and about 5'8, and am pretty self conscious too around some of the tiny lithe skaters. but i found wearing a practice dress actually makes me feel more confident, and can practice better when wearing it. its not about people going 'ooh look what she's wearing, look how she looks..' , its about how you skate.

don't worry, as long as you are healthy and confident about yourself and happy with what you can do on the ice then i think it doesn't matter what other think :) have fun, thats what its really about.

    Happy Skating!

  3. You should do it if it makes you happy. Who cares what other people think when you are out on the ice, as long as you skate well nothing else matters!

  4. I'm sorry but I, and probably quite a few others are ignorant of what "9 stone 8" is in grams or pounds, and I don't have time to look it up.

I'm surprised you didn't give your height in "hands"!

In any case, if you are as athletic as you say, you can certainly compete, and who knows, you might be the next big star and at the same time prove that size doesn't matter.

  5. As for image being important in skating I would have to say that it is... but not the image of body type.  The image that is important is whether you are well turned out.  And by this I mean is your hair up and smooth, is your makeup appropriate, is your dress flattering?

As for being to heavy to skate, I always enough seeing groups where a larger girl goes out there gives it her all and *proves that she can skates just as beautifully and skillfully* as the little twiggy girls!

If you are interested in still loosing weight see a nutritionist who will guide you through healthy weigh loss and just hold on to how much stronger your legs will be that the legs on those twiggy girls!
