  1. NO! Our oldest student is 89 and getting ready for his black belt! Most of our instructors were about 19-30 when they got started. Familes join with their kids and teens. There are more adults than kids/teens in our academy whether in familes, couples, or individuals. Note that your head sensei will be an adult.

There are many different styles of martial arts and they do different things. Examples: Judo and Jui-jitsu are mostly with ground fighting and throws. TKD has various things mixed in and a lot of kicks. MMA(mixed martial arts) has a bit of everything. Karate has an even amount of kicks and punches. Aikido uses circular motions to use your opponents energy against them. There are many many more. Check them out. Most places will let you try some classes for free.

  2. You  are definately not to old.  I would definately go with jiu-jitsu though.  Alot of the taekwondo and karate type schools are just there to take your money.  They do things like setting it up to where its time to test for your belt right around the time its time to re new your contract.  Jiu-jitsu is more performance based on how you do against people at your level and people above you.  Not all the karate schools are like the ones I mentioned but a large majority of them are.

  3. You are not too old. There are many types of martial arts. You can try google or your local phone book. You can also try the YMCA or local recreation centers. Some colleges offer courses too.

If you can find a tournament near you that is always a good source. You may find some good local schools that don't advertise.

  4. I did Tang Soo Do for about 6 years, and I made it to black belt. There are many different types out there, so you just need to do some research. even find a local karate school and watch a class if you're allowed to see what it's like. at 24, I don't think you're too old, anyone can do martial arts, you just need to find what's right for you. kickboxing is also a great alternative, that's fun and could even help you get in shape, if you're not already =) good luck!

  5. You are not too old.  There are many types to take up.  I don't know where you live, but try the yellow pages.  Good Luck!

  6. You're not too old. As a former instructor, I have taught some as old as in their 50's when they started. Yes, there are many different types of martial arts. Find one that provides what you are looking for. Prices will vary.

  7. Definitely not too old.  Go for it!

There are many different types of martial arts (karate, tae kwon do, kung fu just to name a few).  You will be limited by what is available in your area.  Check the yellow pages under "martial arts" to see what is close to you.

Most places will offer a trial for a couple of weeks, then you can try more than one and choose the one you liked better.

Be wary of the people here that say "Muay Thai, Krav Maga or Jiu-Jitsu,  or MMA are the only effective martial arts".

While those martial arts are fine, some people feel that every person's goal in the martial arts is to become a cage fighter or to become and anti terrorism/survival expert.  They forget about the average person who just wants to learn something new, get in shape, learn some self defense and have some fun

    Good luck!

EDIT FOR COST QUESTION:  Depending on where you live, you can expect to pay between $50 and $120 per month.  Your uniform will probably be free, but their may be belt testing fees from $10 to $50.  The more flexible the class schedule, the more the cost.  For example, if you can go as often as you want 2 to 3 classes available per day, 6 days a week, then that will cost more than if it's only on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 pm or if you are only allowed to go once per week.

As for where to get started, again, see your yellow pages and do a trial to someplace that is close to your home.  The closer the better because you are more likely to go more often.

  8. your never too old. had a guy in class that just strarted at 57 years old.

  9. No you are not too old at 24 !!!

Depends whether you want sporting martial arts or street defence martial arts there are too many to choose within both.

my suggestions would be ,Karate,Jiu-jitsu,Aikido,Judo, wing chun as a starting point good luck.

    Best wishes :)***

  10. AFKA(american freestyle karate association) is a good association. It can be pricy depending on where you go and if you compete in tournaments. It also varies on the program you choose in some places. uniforms and belt testings normally cost and monthly payments but thatz basically it. talk to the instructor
