should I go for a package tour deal instead? My plan is Venice to Florence, then Rome and Pompei. Can it be done well in ten days?

  1. you sure can!

you can find everything on www.trenitalia.com I'm sorry but can't find the english version...

When choosing the best train for you, It's better if you take "eurostar" which is the fastest train.

"da dove vuoi partire" means "departure city" and "dove vuoi arrivare" means where you want to go.

You'll have to write i.e. Venezia in the first one and Firenze in the second one.

    It's a 2 and a half or 3 hours trip..

From Firenze to Roma it'll take a hour and a half if you take the Eurostar AKA "ES".

From Rome to Pompei it's a 2 hours long trip.

You'll get to stay 2 days per city...it's not that bad...

    Hope I've been helpful...

oops: i found the english version... here it is http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

  2. Travelling to Italy by train is the best way. Yes you can do it in ten days. I resided in Italy for a few years back in the 1990s. It's a great place to  learn history and art.

  3. Yes, travel by train in Italy is easy and convenient. I have done Pompeii as a day trip from about an hour north of Bologna (using the night trains). Rome is a day trip using the Eurostar. Ten days for your plan is very achievable.

The English interface for trenitalia is at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

One option to consider might be to use the night train from Venice to Naples to get to Pompeii. You can get a berth on the train instead of a hotel, sleep through the night and wake up at or near your destination. From where I live, I can get to Nice, Paris, Munich or Vienna early in the morning, and return home on the night train after a full day sightseeing.

  4. You'll be runnding around pretty quickly but 10 days is a decent amount of time to see the highlights.

The packaged tours are a good idea if you've never been there.  If you are familiar with the train system and there are no strikes, it's an affordable way to go.

    Good Luck and have fun.

  5. yes!

Sara R has some very good points and I'd just re- affirm that.  Thats how I got around Italy with my trip.   Trains were no more then a few mins late. You could buy passes online or though a touch screen keyosk (sp?), see schedules for planning purposes.  Pompei might be a little hard to get to.  I took the train into Napoli meeting family and they took me around that area.

    buon viaggio!

  6. If you fly to Milan, you could see Florence (2 days), then Rome (4 days), and I would spent the remaining 4 days around Campania, I would visit the Amalfi coast or Naples, Sorrento, Capri and Pompeii, Ercolano, Oplonti (you could choose among these places).

It's a pity to go to Campania and visit only Pompeii!

If you could stay more time, it would be better.

You can travel by train even if they are quite expensive, the connections among these cities are well organised.

  7. Conley39 has given you the English language web site for "Train Italia".... run through that site for travel times and even prices. Ten days is OK to do what you've mentioned...

Where will you fly in to (Rome, Milan, Venice?) and out from? This is key to know to make your plan happen,.
