It is mentioned as a residence on an1876 marriage certificate, my ancestor was a butler, so it could be a house or hotel. The vicar who wrote it, (in England) had terrible writing. The best I could make it was in my question, but it could be something similar.

  1. Glenfinnan perhaps? It is about twenty miles west of Fort William in the Highlands.

  2. In Argyll there is: Glenfinart House, at Glen Finart and a Glenfyne Lodge at Glenfyne.

Don't forget some people in the 1800's used to write an ' f 'for an  's', saying that there is an Glenshira Lodge in Glenshirra in Argyll

There is a Glenfinglas, but this is in Perthshire.

However over time some boundaries do change, and Perthshire is bordered by Argyll.

  3. Have you tried different versions of the word?

    I found a

    Glendfinlas

    Glen Finglas

I went ahead and copied some of the places where I saw the word along with the sites...good luck!

Built in the first part of the 19th century, Glenfinlas Street is a quiet no-through-road just off Charlotte Square which was built by Robert Adam as the grand finale of the first Georgian New Town, and is the location of the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland. It is also home to the National Trust for Scotland.

The Walter and Janet mentioned in the old Callander parish register resided in Glenfinglas and had four children, who thus could all be the children of the last laird of Gartnafuaran

In 1602, the Macgregors made a regular raid on the laird of Luss’s lands in GLENFINLAS, and carried off a number of sheep and cattle, as well as slew several of the tenants. Alexander Colquhoun, who had before complained to the privy council against Earl of ARGYLL for not repressing the clan Gregor, but who had failed in obtaining any redress, now adopted a tragic method in order to excite the sympathy of the king.

  5. Here is a list of all the towns in Argyll and Bute:

Nothing jumps out at me but it might be worth having a look with the certificate in front of you.

This list might be more comprehensive as it includes smaller places:

If you could let me know his name and age I'll try looking his birth up on Scotlandspeople for you or I could try the 1871 census on Ancestry.co.uk.

  6. Glenfinnan perhaps?
