Amanda Weir achieves Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day three – 2012 Missouri Grand Prix
Amanda Weir of SwimAtlanta-GA demonstrated her gruelling efforts on closing day of the 2012 Missouri Grand Prix by achieving the title of Women’s 100m freestyle. The meet was organised at the University of Missouri Aquatic Center in Columbia on Sunday, February 12.
Missouri is the third stop of 2011-2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series, which is an annual seven-stage event. This Grand Prix is of utmost value as it paves the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games, thus providing a chance to international players to overpower their shortcomings before the Olympic stage.
The 25-year-old Weir pocketed gold medal of the event in a wonderful manner. With her inconceivable struggles, she remained significantly away from her fellow swimmers and faced no trouble in claiming the crown of double lap freestyle event.
The 25-year-old Weir showered her expertise in the first lap of the race, where she sprinted her way towards the finishing wall in a wonderful time of 26.54 seconds. With her impressive struggle, she remained noticeably away from her strongest opponents, Victoria Poon and Hannah Wilson, who covered the same distance with efforts of 26.69 and 26.83 seconds, respectively.
The arena saw exceptional performance of Weir in the second half, where she sprinted her way towards the finishing wall for gold medal by posting a time of 54.41 seconds.
The champion remained just 2.34 seconds slower from the world mark of 52.07 seconds, made by Britta Steffen of Germany in 2009. She was also 1.11 seconds slower from the US Open record of 53.30 seconds, owned by Cate Campbell of USA from 2008.
She was followed by the 22-year-old Wilson, who stayed almost one second behind and posted an effort of 55.27 seconds for silver medal. In the meantime, the 27-year-old Poon proved her eligibility for the third fastest spot by reporting an effort of 55.38 seconds.
Weir expressed contentment over her promising effort in the double lap swim whereas the podium finishers received awards and accolades for their noteworthy efforts after the session. Furthermore, the championship ended after the conclusion of all scheduled events in Men and Women’s corner.
