Amanda Weir clinches Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one – 2011-12 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series
World champion and Olympic silver medallist, Amanda J Weir of SwimAtlanta-GA outperformed her competitors by clinching gold medal of the Women’s 100m
freestyle on day one of the 2011-12 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series on Friday, January 13. The event is scheduled at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The 25-year-old Weir, who qualified into the final round as the third fastest swimmer, geared up her efforts in the final round and impressed the
crowd by winning gold medal of the race with a timing of 54.14 seconds.
She was trailed by Melissa J Franklin of Colorado Stars-C, who remained just 0.32 seconds behind Weir and hit the finishing blockade with a spectacular
54.46 seconds effort for silver medal.
The 16-year-old Franklin remained just a nail away from her subsequent competitor, Allison R Schmitt of North Baltimore. The 21-year-old Schmitt was
just 0.09 seconds slower from overwhelming Franklin’s effort and reached the medal rostrum with a terrific time of 54.55 seconds for bronze medal.
Next was the equivalent event in Men’s category, where 23-year-old Nathan G Adrian proved his mettle and went home swelling with pride. Adrian, who
reached the final round as second fastest swimmer, faced strong competition from the top qualifying swimmer, Ricky C Berens.
The crowd enjoyed ruthless effort of Adrian, who advanced from his opponents in the final lap. He touched the wall for gold medal with an effort of
48.97 seconds.
With his astounding effort, he remained just 0.16 second ahead of Berens, who emerged on the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 49.13 seconds.
The third position of the event was claimed by Gideon A Louw of Auburn Aquatics, who remained just a touch away from Berens and captured bronze medal of the event by producing a time of 49.19 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd appreciated laudable efforts of all position holders while the championship will continue for two more days and will conclude
after the completion of all planned events in Men’s and Women’s corner. In addition, winners were awarded accolades at the medal ceremony of the championship.
