Amani Toomer does not see Mark Sanchez as New York Jets’ regular starter in the next season
Tim Tebow’s inclusion in New York Jets’ squad after the team traded him from Denver Broncos has already created a furore throughout the National Football League (NFL) as the experts continue to debate if Tebow’s presence will overshadow Jets’ regular quarterback,
Mark Sanchez.
Even thought Jets’ management and both the players have already acknowledged that Sanchez will start for the team while Tebow will serve as his backup, the experts could not help ignoring the sensational performance that Tebow put up in leading Broncos into
the playoffs last season.
Now, the recent addition to the voices that are already gaining strength throughout the sport observers is that of former New York Giants’ wide receiver, Amani Toomer, who thinks that Sanchez will certainly start for Jets, but he will not be able to retain
the starting role and will eventually be replaced by Tebow.
Toomer was of the view that Sanchez would not remain the starter for the entire season and said that Tebow proved his critics wrong that, he said, forced the Jets to bring him in the team.
Toomer commented about Tebow:
"Here is a guy who all the people, all the pundits, say what he can't do, and he can't play. These are guys that he probably looked up to growing up, and all of a sudden you get your opportunity to be on the big stage and all these guys are talking bad about
you, all the pundits.”
He added:
“And he still, no matter what happens, in the fourth quarter, he is there to make plays and win games, and there is something to be said about that. I think the Jets realized that when it happened to them in Denver, so I think they’re fully believing in
him."
In the last NFL season, Jets failed to even qualify for the playoffs and ended the season after winning eight out of 16 games.
Sanchez started all the 16 games in which he completed a total of 308 passes on 543 attempts for 3,474 yards. He had 26 touchdowns under his belt, but he struggled with accuracy and sent 18 interceptions.
It is expected that Jets will start with Sanchez again, but if he does not perform well right from the start, he could be easily replaced by Tebow.
