Amar'e Stoudemire apologizes to fan after g*y slur; NBA to investigate
New York Knicks power forward Amar'e Stoudemire recently created some stir over twitter. Amar’e, in a heated debate with a Knicks fan, used a homophobic slur in a direct message to him.
This stunt has brought him in the hot waters and the NBA officials will be reviewing the incident. The 29-year-old can be subjected to fine amounting up to several thousand dollars.
According to the New York Post, “A source told The Post the NBA plans to look into the authenticity of a profane direct message allegedly sent by Amar’e Stoudemire to a fan over the weekend. Stoudemire allegedly called the fan
a homosexual slur in the direct message, which was forwarded to Deadspin.com via photo”.
The Knicks’ fan whose twitter handle is @BFerrelli, tweeted Stoudemire and used some obscene language, demanding him to comeback stronger and quicker in the next season, and make up for this season’s abrupt performance.
The 6 ft 11 in did not take the tweet well and responded with some pleasantries of his own;
“[Expletive] you. I don't have to do anything [F****T]," Stoudemire said”.
The fan quickly took a screen shot of the condescending message and tweeted it out to the whole world. The message quickly attracted the attention of various on line blogs and Amare had to send an instant apology;
“I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again."
The apology was accepted and the online brawl between the superstar and fan ended right there. However the league will look into the matter and can hand Stoudemire a hefty fine.
In the past, such transgressions have been taken as a serious offense by NBA. One similar happened last season when Kobe Bryant was caught on the camera calling match referee Bennie Adams a f****t. He was fined with $100,000 for
that episode despite offering his apologies afterwards.
The NBA has made sure of a zero tolerance policy against profane acts over twitter. J.R. Smith was fined last season for posting an objectionable picture on his account, and now the Stoudemire episode has brought the twitter issue
to the limelight again.
