Amateur Alan Dunbar all set for the Irish Open
The new golf sensation Alan Dunbar is all set for the Irish Open. Dunbar reserved a space for himself in the Irish Open by winning the Amateur Championship, this Saturday. Dunbar’s dream of playing pro golf finally realized.
Dunbar was crowned the new Amateur Champion at Royal Troon. The 22-year-old won the Championship by defeating Austria’s Matthias Schwab by one stroke.
It turned out to be a very thrilling match as the two players, Dunbar and Schwab, exchanged the lead five times.
For the tournament there were 288 players. After two rounds of stroke play, the top 64 qualified for the match play, from which only one had to win.
Both the players were going head to head. It was all due to Dunbar’s superior putting stroke on the 36th hole and the final hole that made him the champion.
After winning the Amateur Championship, Dunbar, in an interview, said, “It is a tough event to win with so many players taking part over two courses, you need a few breaks but I played a lot of good golf”.
Earlier on, the youngster seemed a bit confused as to what path he should take, he is uncertain about his future right now. "We will sit down over the next few days and have a look at things and see where I want to go," he added.
Dunbar was a part of the Walker Cup winning team last year and he was also the part of the team that won the St. Andrews Links Trophy in the year 2009.
This Saturday, Alan Dunbar became the 3rd Northern Irish winner (Michael Hoey and Garth McGimpsey being the other two) of the Amateur Championship.
Therefore, Dunbar was treated to a hero’s reception on Saturday night, after the big win at his home club.
The event (Irish Open) starts from the 28th of June. For the Irish Open, the newly crowned Amateur Champion will be playing alongside Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley.
After the Irish Open, Dunbar will also be receiving an invitation to next year’s US Open and an invitation to the Master’s Tournament at Augusta National.
