Amateur Jordan Spieth gets a chance to earn his first PGA Tour victory at the Valero Texas Open – Golf News
The 18-year-old amateur Jordan Spieth is aiming to make his presence felt in the field of the Valero Texas Open, slated to start at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, from April 19 to 22, 2012.
With the absence of the top ranked players from the event, the field is wide open for the participants to contend strongly against each other.
The two-time US Junior Amateur champion will make his fifth start on the PGA Tour that may earn him his first professional tour win as an amateur.
He is confident to make a good run as he believes that his game has improved in the past couple of years.
According to him, improvements in his game are due to the increased competition on the course after he left school golf and joined the college golf team.
"I have a lot more time to practice than I did in high school," a composed and thoughtful Spieth said, on Wednesday at the Valero.
"We get out of classes at 12:30 and I have the rest of the day to practice, which is nice, versus in high school, I was there at 3 p.m. and [then] out on the course".
For the last few years, the tournament has lost its respect due to the absence of the big guns from event. The major reason behind this is its schedule between the Masters and Players Championship.
Most of the players prefer to take rest following their appearance in the Masters Tournament to get ready for another big event on the tour.
Therefore, the tournament has witnessed some unexpected winners in the recent past. Brendan Steele was the surprise winner last year, as he carded eight-under par to earn his first PGA Tour victory during his rookie season.
This year, Matt Kuchar and K.J. Choi are the only two players ranked in the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings to participate in the event.
For that reason, Spieth also has the chance to stun his opponents on the field.
"I want to get out there and get in contention and hopefully win," he said Wednesday. "I feel like the course fits my game and I'm confident. I've played it a few times now and everything seems to be falling into place".
