Amateur Julien Brun outshines the field of ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole
Julien Brun joined the league of players who recorded victories as amateurs on the European Challenge Tour. He fired a 13-under par tournament score, to take the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole title home.
After the victory, he became the sixth amateur to register a win on the tour. Moreover, it was also his debut performance on the tour, which makes him the 10th player in history to raise the trophy in his first start.
Brun started off his final round campaign with a one-stroke lead over Matteo Delpodio and parred each of the first two holes that he played.
A birdie on the third hole extended his lead to two strokes. However, he lost that on the very next hole with a bogey. He repeated the same birdie-bogey streak on the next two holes.
Thereafter, he parred each of the last 12 holes, except a birdie on the 12th. His final score, at the end of the round, was a one-under par 70.
In the meantime, Delpodio carded four birdies against three bogeys and posted a 70, to remain on the second spot on the leaderboard.
The victory also earned him a full-time playing card for the 2013 Challenge Tour season. However, he is not in a position to make the decision of whether to play next year, as he is currently studying in his second year at the Texas Christian University.
The three-time collegiate champion is now set to participate in the World Amateur Team Championships in Turkey, scheduled next month.
“It feels great. I’m a little surprised, I don’t really know what to say,” he said. “Maybe next week I will be able to describe my feelings a bit better, once it’s sunk in a little more. I felt a lot of pressure out there, because there were big crowds following
me and I really wanted to win”.
“Of course I felt nervous, but not as nervous as I did when I won my first tournament in college. I’ve got a bit more experience now, so I know what I need to do and I was able to carry out my plan very well today,” he added.
