  1. What is your price range? You've said that you're interested in Nikon, so their line of DSLR cameras would best suit you. If you're just starting out, a great option is the d40x. The next step up is the d80, which offers a more professional option, and the D200/D300 is top-tier. There are higher level cameras available from Nikon, but I would not advise them to an aspiring photographer. Which to choose? I'd recommend choosing a lens that you'd like first, and then choosing a camera that will fit your budget*. http://www.slrgear.com gives a great rundown of almost every lens available on the market today, complete with image quality, street price, and contruction quality. When it comes down to it, the camera will have very little bearing on the quality of your images -- it will be the lens that decides the quality (and of course, skill).

If a DSLR is out of your price range, you could get by with a "prosumer" camera such as a Coolpix P80, though if you're serious about becoming a photographer, it may be best to save up for a DSLR system.

*The d40x has some compatibility issues with some lenses. It only autofocuses with lenses that have autofocus motors in the actual lens. These lenses will have the designation of AF-S from Nikon, and other designations from third party lens manufacturers
