Amateur Salinas off to strong start at LET Q School 2013
Maria Salinas of Peru got off to a sizzling start at the final stage of Lalla Aicha Tour School 2013 on Thursday, shooting a 66 in the opening round to take the share of second spot with Australian Nikki Campbell.
It was a stellar performance from Salinas, who is an amateur, and it is expected that she will keep the momentum going in the next three rounds as well.
The first round of the LET (Ladies European Tour) Q School, being held at Amelkis Golf Club, Morocco, saw Salinas unveil her best putting skills.
The Peruvian star started the round on the front nine, which proved lucky. She parred the first four holes in a row and drained four consecutive birdies starting from the 5th to the 8th hole.
She, however, faltered on the 9th and ended up carding a bogey. On the back nine, Salinas picked up pace and ramped up pressure on rivals by carding another three birdies.
The birdie binge helped the young gun surge past most of the professional contenders in the lineup.
Officials said that the top 60 player who make the cut at the end of the fourth round, will move into the fifth round. The final list on the fifth day will comprise the top 30 players picked for the 2013 LET membership.
Swedish Isabella Ramsay proved her mettle in the first round as she carded a massive 65 to seize an early lead on the leaderboard.
Sharing her thoughts while speaking to the media at the end of the round on Thursday, Ramsay said that she is confident that she will be able to maintain her lead in the next three rounds.
The Swedish star expressed confidence in her bagman, who is also her brother. She said that she and her caddie have made a pretty solid plan for the Q School battle and they are hopeful that things will go in their favour at the end of the event.
“I had eight birdies and missed the 18th hole but made all the rest and the shots were very close to the pin”.
The field is featuring 141 players—most of them professional—and it is expected that the final outcome will be much different from the first-round scenario.
