  1. strictly speaking amateur is taken to be that which one does not earn a living by doing. A professional is one who makes his/her living, in this case, by acting. Therefore amateur dramatics is any dramatics undertaken by those who perform for a hobby and who may or may not have had any training.....that does not mean to say that some amateur plays are not done to a high standard


  2. Answer # 1 offers a valid suggestion, though even community theater usually pays.

       I think "Amateur", in theater might be a nebulous word/term for what Actors do and accomplish. I doubt you'd find many, with any length of experience in theater stating they are amateurs, or thinking of it as a Hobby, though many obviously have other forms of income. They may not be "A" list, globally known in the genre/craft, but they certainly contribute to all things theatrical, especially in the sense of entertainment available and affordable to the masses.
