One fortunate amateur golfer will win the chance to play alongside the golf legend, Tiger Woods, at the pro- am tournament prior to the Dubai Desert Classic. Woods has never finished less than fifth since his participation in the tournament since 2001. He
won the Desert Classic in 2005 and 2008. Part of the European Tour, The Dubai Desert Classic will take place at the Emirates Golf Club and will start from February 9th.
Woods will return to play in European Tour after two years now. The fourteen times major championship winner does take part in the pro-am tournaments but very rarely do amateurs get to tee off against the Tiger. Usually the young players either pay for their
place or are not really guaranteed an opportunity. This year, however, the amateur players really struck gold as they don’t have to pay to register and it is confirmed that Tiger will be there to golf with.
The requirements to register are basically that the player has to have a ‘valid handicap’. Men must have a handicap of 18 or below whereas for women it’s 26 or below. The players should register at http://www.golffindubai.org/
and will be told of the results two weeks prior to the tournament.
The main objective behind this ‘treat’ is to increase the popularity of golf in Dubai. Normally, events don’t really attract the general public of Dubai, especially among the Emiratis. Amazing European players such as Martin Kaymer or Lee Westwood find themselves
playing for a crowd of merely one or two people. However, if stars like Tiger Woods are there to play, the crowd is a bit more enthusiastic.
The very intention behind having this online draw is to encourage amateurs to be part of the fun," said Mohamed Juma Buamaim. "Playing alongside Tiger is a dream of every player," he said. "I am sure the lucky one, male or female, will learn quite a few
things about the game just (by) watching him play, up close and personal." Mohamed is the vice chairman and CEO of the company golf in Dubai.
Even though Tiger didn’t have the best year in 2010, he is still an amazing player. With the news of his infidelity going public, Tiger split from his wife Elin Nordegren in August. This was the first time in Tiger’s career that he didn’t win a single event.
Putting all this behind, Tiger is hoping to do well in 2011. Despite everything, any golf fanatic would love to play amongst Woods and they might just get their chance in Dubai next year.
