i am a Amature Boxer and about to turn 16, which is the minimum age to become an Amature MMA fighter and i would love to explore my possibilities. I wanted to know if i should take some kind of a Karate or Kickboxing or anything like that before making the transition from boxing to MMA?

  1. well you already have boxing so i would join your school wrestling team. also i would join a mma gym or a gym would where they teach Muay Thai and bjj and then you should be set

  2. Learn some wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Boxers get killed in MMA.

  3. Some jiu-jitsu would enhance your boxing and chances whilst learning from a worldly wise coach :)***

  4. Your about to turn 16 right? Since you are in high school, you should seriously consider joining your school's wrestling team.

It's free and it will help you learn takedowns (if you want it to go to the ground.) and how to defend against them (if you want to keep the fight standing). it will also help you lean a bit about keeping a dominant position on the ground.

You will also need to know how to deal with submissions. Brazilian JiuJitsu, Judo (some more than others) and SAMBO all teach these.

Of course, you will need expand your striking. Muay Thai, San Da, Kyokushin Karate and it offshoots, and other places that do hard contact sparring can provide this.

Most MMA gyms will have both a BJJ and a Muay Thai instructor present and they should also help you in making what you know useful in a MMA fight.

  5. Well since you have hands skills you should consider learning a grappling style art like JiuJitsu or Judo for ground fighting. Very important to have this skill. You should also learn Muay Thai which has very practical and brutal kicking, knees, and elbow strikes. Of the three arts I mentioned those are the most used in MMA training.
