Amazing moments of 2012 Major League Baseball season – Part 1
As we now get in to the playoffs, the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season is officially over. It has been a memorable season with many highs and lows. Teams that the critics thought would cruise to the postseason did not finish anywhere near their
potential as some low-key teams came through to surprise most of us.
There were many spectacular individual performances during the 2012 MLB regular season as well. Players both young and old alike managed to amaze most of us with their tremendous performances on and off the field. Pitchers and batters, managers and trades,
there was a mix of everything this year as the drama of the MLB regular season never ceases to fascinate most of us.
Let’s take a look at some of the amazing moments (in no particular order) from the 2012 MLB regular season below.
Old is gold:
The 49-year-old Colorado Rockies’ pitcher Jamie Moyer became the oldest player to win a game as he helped his team beat the San Diego Padres 5-3. He proved once again that it is not age but hard work and determination that can lead to great things in baseball.
Unfortunately the Rockies did not have much to cheer about during the regular season as their performance was lacking. They ended the 2012 regular season at the bottom of the National League West Division. Colorado was one of those teams that looked good on
paper but was unable to put in a good performance on a consistent basis.
Fenway Park turns 100:
Fenway Park turned 100-years-old on April 20, 2012 as the Boston Red Sox celebrated their coveted stadium. Many former Red Sox players joined in the festivities as the team took on the New York Yankees. The Red Sox went on to lose that game to the Yankees.
Too bad the Red Sox did not see that as a dismal sign early in the regular season as they went on to a horrible year. The Red Sox could not get it together during the 2012 MLB regular season and ended it on a sour note as they sit at the very bottom of the
American League East Division. There is nothing pretty about watching a brilliant dominant team end up struggling for wins and barely holding on against mediocre teams like the Red Sox did throughout the 2012 MLB regular season.
Shiny new stadium for Miami Marlins:
The Miami Marlins got their brand new high-tech stadium to the delight of the fans and the management. The Marlins took on the St. Louis Cardinals on April 4, 2012. The Cardinals went on to beat the Marlins 4-1. There is nothing worse than losing the first
game in your brand new stadium at the beginning of the regular season. However, that was not the only game the Marlins would be losing, as they had a forgettable regular season ending up at the bottom of the National League East Division. It seems that a new
stadium is not a substitute for hard work and player performances. The Marlins will be hoping for better things next year as they will probably just want to forget about the 2012 MLB regular season.
Bryce Harper makes MLB debut:
What a tremendous player Bryce Harper has turned out for the Washington Nationals. He made his debut in the Majors and never looked back. Although he had some issues early on with his temper and somewhat immature behaviour on the field, the player has put
in a very good performance for the Nationals to definitely help them get to the postseason this year. At only 19-years-old, many critics are sensing great things from this young player in the future. It makes me think of many young players that are just waiting
on the sidelines for a chance to prove themselves in the Majors. What other hidden talented players might be sitting in the Minors or on the bench for many teams is something many clubs will be looking at after seeing the tremendous talents of Bryce Harper.
