Amazing moments of 2012 Major League Baseball season – Part 6
Since the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season just ended, I was hoping that we could have a season in which the topic of Performance Enhancing Drugs could not be discussed. In fact there was hope that all of these issues had been cleaned up and now
it was back to baseball pure and simple.
Little did I know, as again another unfortunate PED issue came up and even though this list is for the amazing moments of the 2012 MLB regular season it should be included as something that will stick in our minds as something to remember. Like most fans
we tend to forget that baseball is not just a sport but it is also a business. In fact it is a massive business with tons of money flying around the place, so it is no wonder some players will do anything to get a competitive edge.
Continued from Part 5 are the amazing moments of 2012 MLB regular season.
Melky Cabrera fails drug test:
San Francisco Giants’ Melky Cabrera was given a 50-game suspension as he failed a drug test that came out positive for Testosterone. After having a tremendous performance during the All-Star Game, Melky seems to have dropped the ball. His 50-game suspension
will definitely hurt the San Francisco Giants in the postseason and his personal reputation as a clean honest player is certainly now tainted.
A 50-game suspension can wreak havoc on a player as the team is usually weary of bringing back a player immediately after such a scene. Not to mention the fact that other players are bumped up in the roster to fill in the gaps and they usually try to make
the most of the rare opportunity to prove their worth to the team. It will be interesting to see how the Giants tip toe around this sensitive issue as they are entering the playoffs looking to take another World Series title.
Just when we thought the 2012 MLB regular season was going to be clean, Melky tested positive and once again we find ourselves in the midst of another PED issue. I guess I am like most fans that are now starting to think that we will never rid ourselves
of this issue from baseball.
New York Yankees’ Mariano Rivera injures knee:
The New York Yankees’ Mariano Rivera is out of action as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. This type of injury is quite severe and could possibly be career ending. Rivera has been with the Yankees for 18-years and holds the record for most
saves with 608. Although the Yankees are known to be one of the best teams in MLB to adapt to injuries, having a pitcher like Rivera out for the rest of the season and possible postseason is devastating.
Not just Yankees’ fans, but those that love baseball feel a sense of loss as Rivera is a tremendous pitcher with an amazing record. He has saved the Yankees on numerous occasions and his on field presence is something that will be missed by the players,
fans and management. The Yankees have the depth and experience in their pitching rotation to hopefully manage a decent postseason appearance. However, with Rivera out the future of the Yankees’ pitching strength could be seriously hampered next year.
