Amazombie all set for Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs
Coming off an emphatic win in the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes against some serious sprinters, Amazombie cut open the field to register his fourth win of the season where he hasn’t once finished worse than third.
The 5-year-old gelding hasn’t been fazed with all that is going around the Breeders’ Cup and will be pointed toward the Grade 1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint held at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011.
The California bred Amazombie had the opportunity to run in the California Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on 29 October, 2011, especially when he has been running well in California against all the California bred and Florida bred runners.
Earlier this year, Amazombie dashed past his opponents in the Sunshine Millions Turf at Santa Anita Park on 29 January, 2011, against California and Florida breds over at six furlongs.
Paired up with jockey M Smith, Amazombie gun downed the likes of David Fawkes trained sprinter, Apriority who finished second in the race and Cost of Freedom who rolled in third while Amazombie covered the distance in 1 minute and 7.28 seconds.
The son of Northern Afleet, out of Wilshe Amaze by In Excess, Amazombie was the best amongst the Cal breds in the Tiznow Stakes as well, when he romped through and through in the seven and a half furlong long dash over at synthetic surface, which he hasn’t run on a long time, in fact he broke his maiden on poly track and his next on the surface was in the Tiznow.
On 23 April, 2011, at Hollywood Park under Joel Rosario, Amazombie picked up the pace, and won the race with the winning time of 1 minute and 29.06 seconds.
After the Tiznow, Amazombie registered three third place finishes on the trot, starting from Grade 3 Los Angeles Handicap moving on to Grade 1 Triple Bend and lastly the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes all on synthetic surface.
Trainer William Spawr said that if they hadn’t won the Ancient Title Stakes, then the plans would have been different, and Amazombie would’ve been pointed toward the Cal Cup rather than the Sprint.
