Amazombie looks in the right form to ace the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar
Amazombie will have to bring his best game forth in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes in order to make his record even more impressive.
He is one of the most popular runners, running in one of the biggest races of the year. Hosted at Del Mar on 29th July, 2012, over six furlongs, the gelding will have to step it up to land the victory.
The six-year-old has been on a lay-off since May, 2012, and will now return to the track for better measure. Previously, he competed in the seven furlong Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes at Churchill Downs, where he lost the victory to Shackleford.
Now, well-rested and in good form, he is ready to be back on top. Trainer Bill Spawr who co-owns the horse with Tom Sanford is hoping he will be able to do it since that will earn him an automatic spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on
3rd November, 2012.
The trainer is optimistic about the sprinter’s chances, since the runner has really been blossoming in his work-outs. Under jockey Mike Smith, he completed half-mile in 47 seconds. Spawr commented on this and said:
“Mike said he was stronger and more eager than before.”
He also added:
“I think the time off has helped. We won’t have any excuses.”
Last year, the older division runner stood third in the Bing Crosby, but went on to win the Grade 1 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint.
The son of Northern Afleet has an impressive record of 11-5-6 out of 26 starts. He has career earnings of $1,725,378, and he is aiming to gain more wealth and fame this season as well.
The mega-event has attracted a small field of runners, and among those the most threatening one is the Bob Baffert trained, The Factor, who will be ridden by Martin Garcia.
The son of War Front finished as a runner-up in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes at the Betfair Hollywood Park in June, 2012, over the distance of seven furlongs. He looks strong and has an impressive record of 6-1-0 from 12 starts.
