Amazombie on the right course ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs next month
Thomas C. Sanford and William Spawr’s 5-year-old gelding Amazombie, on course for Breeders’ Cup Sprint, to be held on 5 November, 2011, at Churchill Downs where he will face older sprinters and very good ones indeed.
Trained and part owned by William Spawr, Amazombie will come up against the last year winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Big Drama along with Bob Baffert’s duo The Factor and Euroears.
Todd Pletcher has doubled his prospects as well by sending Aikenite and Dark Thunder and the rest of the caste would include the ominous Smiling Tiger, the ever threatening Giant Ryan and D Lukas trained Hamazing Destiny.
The Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint is run over at a distance of six furlongs on dirt for 3-year-old males and above.
The last year’s top 3 of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint are participating in this year’s edition as well. Hamazing Destiny who finished behind Big Drama for second place finish and Smiling Tiger rolling in behind the top 2 and settling for a third place finish.
On the other hand, Amazombie is coming off a win in the Grade 1 Ancient Title at Santa Anita Park over its dirt course on 8 October, 2011.
Under jockey M Smith, Amazombie took his time in the early going as usual and hunted down his opponents in the stretch, downing Irrefutable and Mensa Heat in the process, who finished second and third respectively while Amazombie covered the six furlong
distance in 1 minute and 8.24 seconds.
The son of Northern Afleet, out of Wilshe Amaze by In Excess, Amazombie has had a pretty good 2011 season, not even finishing worse than third in all of 8 starts this season.
His 2011 record stands at 4 wins, one second place finish and 3 third place finishes on the trot before winning the Grade 1 Ancient Title.
Over all Amazombie has nine wins from 22 starts with the earnings of $715,708, and the ‘come off’ the pace 5-year-old gelding has won once going wire to wire.
Amazombie is visiting the track everyday and he is right on course ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint challenge where he will get to meet all the foes he vanquished this season.
