Amazombie owned the Santa Anita track after the fastest drill of the day on 3 February
The Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winning 6-year-old sprinter, Amazombie, has picked up the pace significantly as he prepares for his seasonal debut in the Grade 2, $200,000 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita on 25 February, 2012.
Trained and co-owned by Bill Spawr, Amazombie turned in his recent workout at Santa Anita on 3 February, 2012, and topped the Santa Anita work tab by going six furlongs in 1 minute and 12 seconds flat, which turned out to be the fastest out of 22 recorded at that distance.
Under exercise rider, Alex Bisono, Amazombie was fast and furious as he zipped through the track in no time, and his recent work resembled the one he turned in on 29 January, with a hand drill of four furlongs in 48 2/5 seconds.
The California bred son of Northern Afleet, out of mare Wilshe Amaze by In Excess, Amazombie was supposed to make his initial start of the year in the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes, but Bill Spawr scratched the gelding out of the race, because the track was sealed after an early morning rain storm.
“Easy, easy, easy,” is how an ecstatic Spawr described the drill. “When he got back to the barn, he was already cooled out. Unbelievable. He’s right on schedule for the San Carlos.”
In 2010, Amazombie dwelled in allowance and allowance/optional claimers after breaking his maiden in the same season, but 2011 was perfectly planned out for Amazombie, as the gelding kicked things off with a run in a stakes race, Sunshine Millions Sprint, and it was an instant success.
He never finished worse than third in the entire season with 9 starts. He posted 5 wins out of those 9 starts and was placed 4 times with a lone runner-up show.
“He’ll have two more works before the San Carlos,” Spawr said. “He’ll work three-quarters or seven-eighths next Friday (Feb. 10) and have one more after that. We’re right on schedule.”
So far so good at the training tracks for Amazombie, but nothing boosts the confidence of a horse more than spending some time on the track in a real race, and if he kicks off things the way he did in the previous season, it will be another sprinting spree from Amazombie to look forward to.
