Amazombie to star in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita
The California bred son of Northern Afleet, Amazombie, wrapped up the 2011 season with a champion sprint male championship which became all the more evident after the newly turned 6-year-old gelding successfully ran down Force Freeze to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, at about 6 furlongs on dirt.
Amazombie, since then, hasn’t been seen in action, and according to trainer Bill Spawr, he can’t find a suitable race for his sprinter.
Fans all around the country were expecting a showdown between the Breeders’ Cup Sprint Champion, Amazombie, and a refreshing sight for everyone recently, the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes winning electrifying runner, Caracortado, in the Sensational Star Stakes.
However, Bill Spawr came in and thought better of his runner, saying: “look around the country” for a race for his champion sprinter.
Out of mare Wilshe Amaze by In Excess, Amazombie got scratched from the Palos Verdes Stakes, and if Bill Spawr can’t pinpoint races for his sprinter, the 6-year-old gelding would have to wait for the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes on 25 February, 2012, at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course at about seven furlongs, a race which could include The Factor.
“I’m glad we didn’t run (in the Palos Verdes),’ Spawr said Sunday morning.
“We’ll look around the country for a race, but the plan now is to run in the San Carlos.”
Amazombie, who hasn’t run since 5 November, 2011, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner is no short of workouts, as he turned in his latest work at a mile under the watchful eye of trainer Bill Spawr.
On the other hand, Caracortado, who is pointed towards the Sensational Star Stakes at Santa Anita Park on 28 January, 2012, at about six and a half furlongs on turf, galloped a mile and five eighths ahead of the race.
The Sensational Star has reeled in 8 runners, a race which is exclusive for 4-year-old and above males.
The 5-year-old gelding, Caracortado’s goal is to start in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on 3 March, 2012, at Santa Anita Park at about a mile on turf.
