Amazombie working hard toward his next start
The California bred Breeders’ Cup sprint champion 6-year-old gelding, Amazombie, disappointed in the first start of his new campaign as he got undone by a brilliant run by the Bob Baffert trained, The Factor, who is an equally good sprinter without any medals, but he showed in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes on 25 February, 2012, over a seven furlong sprint that he can compete and defeat the best.
The Factor covered the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 20.56 seconds, as Sway Away finished ahead of Amazombie in second.
To assure there aren’t any mishaps in the rest of the campaign, Amazombie is on a tough work schedule for trainer Bill Spawr, who on 16 March worked half his barn with rain clouds hovering over, he took out Amazombie and gave him to jockey Alex Bisono.
The pair took the field and worked five furlongs in 59.60 seconds, and according to Spawr it was a very good work as Amazombie galloped out the rest in 1 minute and 12 seconds at Santa Anita Park.
Co-owned by Bill Spawr in partnership with Thomas C. Sanford, Amazombie capped off his 2011, with two brilliant runs, as he downed the Grade 1 Ancient Title at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course on 8 October, 2011, under jockey Mike Smith, and the pair defeated Irrefutable in second and Mensa Heat in third, while covering the distance in 1 minute and 8.24 seconds.
Ancient Title was a prep race before the big one, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint last fall at Churchill Downs, where he defeated the defending champion Force Freeze in second and Jackson Bend in third to win the race and the 2011 sprint honours.
“He’s very respected,” said Bisono. "When people see me working for him, they obviously know that I’m doing a good job."
“Business is picking up little by little. I’m working really hard and people are noticing that. They’re starting to give me better opportunities.” “Irish” Brandon O’Bryan is Bisono’s agent.
Amazombie could either go for the Grade 2, $150,000 Potrero Grande Stakes or Grade 3, $200,000 Count Fleet Sprint Stakes for his next start.
