Thanks for taking the time to read this and/or answer.

What I need is all the reasons why companies/individuals are doing this, or at least most of the major reasons.

Thanks

  1. The Amazon rainforest is rich in timber.  That is worth a lot of money.  And--it is cheaper to "clear-cut" a forest )simply strip the land--than to responsibly remove trees in a way that not only preserves the forest, but can actually make it more vigorous.

In addition, agricultural interests (and sometimes urban developers) can acquire land cheaply for "development"--thereby increasing their profits, even though this is poor land-use management.

In short:  greed. That, ultimately, is the reason--the only reason.

  2. The need for cropland. Same as was done in America. If our farmers hadn't cleared the land (trees) we would not be able to feed ourselves today.

Sure it's easy for some well off rich kid in America or Europe to whine about greed and bla bla bla. But some real thought must go into a question like this. The people clearing the rain forest might be the rich landowners, but the people working on that land and feeding their families are poor farmers. What should they do for food? Kill cheetahs?

So whether it suits us well fed people or not, the problem is not as simple as pointing a finger and screeching about greed.

  3. We want farm crops and ethanol. Ethanol from sugar cane, food for cattle to send us beef,

You know, all the foods we like to eat.

Were it not for demand for food and ethanol, we would still like to harvest some big valuable logs, but we would not clear the forest, just remove slices of it for regrowth.

You can do your part by not eating, not using ethanol, or perhaps find some other land to grow those things on, land not already in use, land that can produce that food, not desert.

  4. Don't believe it.  Greed seems right to the uninformed.  The industry that feeds our want for exotic hardwoods does not clear cut the rain forest.  It does selectively remove trees without concern for overall forest health (in most cases) but it is the need for open land to farm that causes the loss of the forest.  Most of what grows there is only worth fire wood and that is only of value to locals who do use it ...but mostly it's the land they want.  The thin soils are only good to farm for a few years so those folks need to move on and denude more.  Pluss, their population is growwing fast (habits from times when many died young) ,,,Sooo much more to this subject...  It is a true delema of the human condition.  There are some real good solutions but all cost a bundle of cash.  Stop buying coin collections and new snow boards and get involved solving the problem.  ...if it's what you really care about.  Or, chalk it up to greed and send ten dollars to green peace / friends of the earth / or some other goofs.

  5. They need to plant more sugarcane to make their ethanol... So yeah... They cut down the rainforest to plant sugarcane for ethanol... Kinda ironic eh?

  6. One obvious reason and only one. Dead Presidents, Money, Moo-la, green stuff, paper that has no backing.

  7. money,,,,much cleared for farms,,,the "wonderful" oil free brazil paid for it,,,big time....

  8. The answer you are seeking is "greed".

The deforestation is all about people clearing land for farming and development (greed). Its about stripping the land of its resources such as wood, minerals, animals, plants (again greed).

The better question is who would be disadvantaged if they stopped the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest? I think that the peoples contributing to the deforestation would lose the money that they would otherwise receive.
