  1. It is named for the Indians indiginous to that region.  Amazon means, in Greek legend, large women. The Amazon River is the largest by volume.  It is greater than the next top ten rivers combined.  There has always been a dispute over which river is longer; the Amazon or the Nile.  The latest survey, conducted in 2001, concluded that the Amazon is longer than the Nile by about 248 miles.  Some will contest those findings.  Different surveys have the Amazon anywhere from 3,903 miles to 4,195 miles long.  The Nile is between 3,437 miles to 4,180 miles long.  The differences vary depending where each survey says the headwaters actually start for each river.

  5. The Amazon Basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. The basin is located mainly (54%) in Brazil, but also stretches into Peru and several other countries. The South American rain forest of the Amazon is the largest in the world, covering about 8,235,430 km2 with dense tropical forest. For centuries, this has protected the area and the animals residing in it.
