Ambitious Lewis ramps up pressure on number one Tseng
The 2012 Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) season may have ended, but the rivalry between the current world number one Yani Tseng and American Stacy Lewis appears
to have intensified, with the latter snapping up the Best Player of the Year title.
Stacy Lewis, who has been in a nail-biting competition with Tseng in terms of world ranking and the number of victories and top-ten finishes, now seems more relieved
than she was at the start of the 2012 season.
The American star stunned all her rivals after she cemented her position for the Rolex Player of the Year 2012. With four victories in her pocket and a total of sixteen
top-10 finishes in the season, Lewis easily subdued every contender in the lineup—and a hard-to-beat Tseng was no exception.
Sharing her thoughts during one of her recent interviews, Lewis said that she had always wanted to beat the number one golfer, but had not been able to perform well enough
to give herself an edge over rivals.
“I never thought I could get better than Yani. Maybe for a day I could be better or in a tournament, but not over a full year,” said the American golfer who has won a
total of five LPGA titles since turning pro in 2008.
But beating Tseng on the Best Player of the Year list took Lewis plenty of hard work and determination as the world number one had been unbeatable all season last year.
The year 2011 was arguably the most momentous season for Tseng, as she won seven LPGA titles.
“Especially the way she (Tseng) played last year," Lewis added.
Although Lewis is still trying to grab the number one spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, her passion apparently has not worn off. She is currently standing at the third position but
her confidence is running at an all-time high.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi, who won the season-ending CME Group Titleholders 2012, has now taken over the second position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, pushing Lewis down to the third
spot again.
Now with the hype of the new season, Lewis can shift her focus back on the world rankings as other Asian rivals are also proving tough.
