Ambitious Wie hopes to capitalise on crowd support in Taiwan
American Michelle Wie, who finished tied for the 30th position at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship 2012 last week, has said that she is ready to amaze her Taiwanese fans at the upcoming
Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2012.
The Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship, a 72-hole tournament co-sanctioned by the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, is going to be staged from October 25-28, at Yang Mei, Taoyuan,
Taiwan.
The event has been given the added hype due to the presence of current world number one Yani Tseng, who hails from Taiwan and is also the defending champion.
However, players like Michelle Wie cannot be ignored, as they claim they know the course well and fans will love to get behind them once they set foot on the course.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour during her pre-tournament interview on Tuesday, Wie said that she has a huge fan following in Taiwan and is confident that she will be given plenty of crowd support—something
she desperately needs to keep her momentum intact.
No matter how pumped up Wie may be, it will be an uphill task for her to subdue fearsome Asian contenders who are more familiar with the course and weather than their European and American
rivals.
Key contenders ready to tee off the tournament on Thursday include Lexi Thompson, Suzann Pettersen, Vicky Hurst, Paula Creamer, Caroline Hedwall, Mindy Kim, Belen Mozo, Lizette Salas, Katie
Futcher, Pernilla Lindberg, Catriona Matthew and Cristie Kerr.
“I have a lot of expectations here. I’m really looking forward to all of the Taiwanese fans. I hear a lot of people come to the event. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the fans at the
course,” Wie shrugged off the possible challenge she may face in Taiwan this week.
Wie is trying to end her protracted winning drought and has been under tight scrutiny from her fans.
But the down-to-earth golfer does not seem to be under pressure at all, as she said that she is enjoying her stay in this country. “More importantly I’m excited for all of the yummy foods
here. So I’m excited for this week”.
