  1. EMT's and Paramedics are responsible for one thing at the scene of an accident- the patient.

They initiate life-saving actions and stabilize the patient(s). If extrication is required, they become the patient's advocate. They are in the car with the patient advising them of what extrication methods are being used while assessing the patient. They make sure that broken glass does not fall on the patient when windows are removed, and make sure they are not crushed when firefighters use the jaws to remove the car from around the patient.

At the scene, EMT's are responsible for the patient, firefighters are responsible for extrication and any hazards associated with the car itself (stabilization, fuel leaks, fire), and police are responsible for scene safety (traffic control, disorderly people).

EMT's work with the fire department to get the patient out as quickly and safely as possible. EMT's work with police to protect them, and occasionally to detain a patient who is uncooperative.

  2. I couldn't find anything *specifically* for at an accident scene, but the link below covers the basic duties required. I know only for one given county, but it should be pretty standard for about anywhere.

  3. A paramedic's purpose is to save lives! They try to minimize the damage from medical and trauma emergencies by providing care at the scene and on the way to the hospital.

They stabilize patients so they can be transported as safely as possible.

They use cutting edge technology and they are allowed to perform some rather invasive procedures such as surgical airways and paralyzing a patient to put a breathing tube down his throat.

They can administer up to 60 different medications (depending on the individual state's protocols).

Paramedics also help to prevent injuries, too.
