Amended birth certificates.?

Question should amended birth certificates have a stamp that says the child is adopted? And should the birth parents and the adoptive parents be listed for legal reasons?

I for one think that children conceive from donor egg or sperm should have that indicated on the birth certificate. So why not adoptees too?

  1. We adopted our son from Russia. They offered to change anything we wanted on the birth certificate - date, parents, name. We kept it as-is, with as much factual info as possible.

  2. I am currently adopting my foster child.  Today the caseworker brought me her birth certificate and SS card.  He told me I could do whatever I wanted with it because I would be getting new ones with her new last name on them and our names listed as the parents at birth.

This seems sooo strange to me.  I guess I was just unaware that you could just make up a new birth scenario and put it on an official certificate.  I think this would be useful if I wasn't planning on telling her that she was adopted, but in my case I don't think it is necessary.

  3. I'm not crazy about a big stamp that says "ADOPTED" but I think "amended"  is OK and should begin with identifying the birth parents. As an AP that wouldn't bother me at all.

This gives me an idea for a question about birth certificates...stay tuned.

  4. I am on the fence about this, but I tend to lean towards, yes, the birth certificate should indicate that it is amended.  I don't think both sets of parents should be on the certificate.  Legally, you only have ONE set of parents, be they your biological parents or a-parents.

I do not agree that there is any reason to indicate egg or sperm donor on the birth certificate unless they start doing DNA tests on ALL babies.  What would be the point of the government keeping track of such private information?  Because really, that is the point of a birth certificate in the first place - identification of the legal parents and tracking of information.

  5. You're right Angelcuddle.
