Amendment 9 is a bit confusing.

Its a bit confusing. But I'm trying to do my gov't assignment and have to re-write the constitution plus amendments in modern language. So do you think you could possibly help me rewrite this.

  1. back when they were doing the bill of rights, there was a fear that they would leave something out that would be critical to maintaining a free country.

    the 9th amendement addresses the rights not spelled out.  So basically it says hey even though its not written in here, that does not mean that it does not belong to the people.

    the right to privacy which led to the roe v wade decision is a classic example of the 9th amendement in use.  ie even though privacy is not spelled out, there is an implied right to privacy and therefore it belongs to the people - not the state.

  2. um i think it means that people have personal rights that are not included in the constitution such as the right to privacy. i believe this is the amendment they used to argue ( and win) the case of roe v. wade in supreme court. (there was a lady who was defending her right to get an abortion becasue of her right to privacy that isn't explicitly stated in the constitution)
