Amer Delic batters Roman Borvanov
in 1st round – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
Amer Delic got the better of Moldovan Roman Borvanov in the first round of the Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
The two had taken up the challenge on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. It took Delic only fifty three minutes to pulverize Borvanov in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday the 1st
of November 2011.
Initiating the first round for the match was Borvanov and he got off to a bad start as he was unable to hold his service game. On the contrary, Delic not only capitalised on a break but also held his serve to reel straight two
games and placed himself on the scoreboard with a mini lead of 2-0. It was in the third game that Borvanov made a return by holding his serve and by the end of the fourth game; the score had shifted to 3-1 with Delic leading the set.
It was in the fifth game that Delic once more capitalized on a breakpoint and by the sixth game he was now only a game away from victory. However, he was unable to close the set in the following game, mean while, Borvanov had reduced
the deficit to 2-5 by the end of the seventh game.
The serve switched, Delic smashed a marvellous forehand winner to bag the opening set with a 6-2 victory and was now one up in the match.
The second set was commenced by Borvanov and this time he was able to hold his first service game to kick open the scoreboard at 1-0. Following behind him was Delic, who too bagged a service game to place himself on the scoreboard
at 1-1. It was in the third game that the Moldovan had erred and endorsed a crucial breakpoint.
On the other hand, Delic squandered two successive games to take the lead at 3-1 by the end of the fourth game. Delic repeated the feat once more and by the end of the sixth game he was only a game away from victory. However, he
was unable to close the set and in his third match point, he finally seized the opportunity to smash a backhand shot down the line and sealed his victory of the set and the match.
Delic managed to reserve a spot in the second round of the match where he will be facing British lucky loser Alex Bogdanovic.
