  1. Kind of hard to answer your question.

You don't say what your budget is.

You don't say how long you are planning on staying.

You don't say what your interests are.

1st off, NYC isn't cheap. There is no such thing as a cheap room. A standard tourist hotel room (room with private bath) will start about $250US or about 130 Pounds a night. You could get a hostel for around $100 US a night, but will have to share a bath and potentially deal with bedbugs.

You won't need a car to visit NYC. Actually you shouldn't have a car in NYC.

As for "somewhere" else in America, America is a big place. You don't say where else you want to visit and for how long. You can rent a car if you plan of visiting areas around NYC. However if you plan on visiting California, it would take 3 days to drive there if all you did was drive, you are better off flying.

  2. If you are going to be staying in New York City, don't bothering renting/hiring a car at all - not needed. Once outside NYC you can rent a car from many agencies, hertz and enterprise are two good ones. Gas is a bit steep these days, you could also look into traveling by train - Amtrak is fairly well priced. There are buses as well, but they are not a great way to travel.

Check out any New York guidebook or online tourist site - there really is too much to list or do justice to. For tourism outside of he city, I would say take a trip to Philadelphia and Boston - both are east coast cities but different from NY. You will see some country side as well on your way.

What to expect - Americans are very open and friendly - we are kind to tourists in general and fairly used to showing people around or giving advice on good places to eat, etc...

I don't know how much time you will be spending, or what your interests are, but hope your trip is fun - check out the lonely planet tourist site - they always have tons of useful advice.

Not sure about where you should stay as you don't mention budget - but as you are a student I would say try the Westside YMCA hostel in Manhattan - I have not stayed there myself, but I have heard decent things about it. The exchange rate is in your favor. You could also try a B&B in Brooklyn, it might be a bit cheaper. (just do a search on B&B  Brooklyn, lots come up)

  3. America is awesome. I live in texas, but i just got back from vactioning in NYC. Things can get very expensive there. But things are really cool.

Of course it is very crowded, but pretty. If you are religious, there are  tons of churches. And if you are hungry there is almost every type of food there. Especially, sushi!

    Hope this helps!

  4. no need to worry once you're in NYC

when you get here you'll see all the taxes everywhere literally packed

    and food options

dont look like a tourist because the people selling food on the streets are going to rip you off so go in a nice Buffet or nice restaurant

people can be very rude here so dont get offended if someonesays something to you if you bump into them

uhm places to live you can find hotels and nice places to stay at just do some research andwhen you choose the place make sure to ask yahoo people if that place is a safe neighborhood

you dont want to end up in a dirty dangerous place

    and other than that

    good luck

i live in NY and i know exactly what the city life is like
