American Bo Van Pelt romps to a big win at CIMB Asia Pacific Classic
American Bo Van Pelt finally turned the tide to his favour when he clinched a long-awaited victory at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic on PGA Tour on Sunday, October 30. Shooting a massive seven-under, 64 on the final day, the 36-year-old Richmond Indiana native
secured his third professional and first Asian Tour victory at the picturesque The Mines Resort & Golf Club, Selangor, Malaysia.
"I've watched other guys coming down 18 with a big lead and I thought, 'That would be fun some day if I could do that,'" Van Pelt said. "And it was. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I get to do what I love to do for a living."
Van Pelt has several high profile finishes this season but was not able to translate his better performance into victories. He posted four top-ten finishes in the season, making 19 cuts in his 27 appearances. He finished for a joint eight at Masters earlier
in the season, for an outright third at Crowne Plaza Invitational, joint sixth at RBC Canadian Open, and seventh at Deutsche Bank Championship. He also had a joint 14th finish at the US Open in Atlanta.
"I've had a couple of chances to win this year, but didn't come out on top," Van Pelt said. "Canada was a tough pill to swallow. I just wanted to learn from that and do a better job when I had the lead. I take a lot of satisfaction in how I played today."
Van Pelt pulled in seven birdies in the final round and did not drop a single shot in the final 18-hole stretch. His performance over the weekend, speak volumes of his fine form when he started off the event with an eagle on the third of the first round.
He carded rounds of 66, 64, 67 and 64 to win the title by six shots. Jeff Overton, despite of his impressive performance over the weekend, was not good enough to challenge Van Pelt on the final day.
Swede Fredrik Jacobson finished further down the leaderboard, one shot behind Overton. The event was co-sanctioned by PGA Tour with a total purse of $6.1-million.
