American Brett Wetterich lifts the Chitimacha Louisiana Open title for the second time
Brett Wetterich fired a stunning 2-under for 69 to lift the Nationwide Tour’s Louisiana Open with a two stroke lead over Colombian Andres Echavarria. This is the second time Wetterich has won the tournament on what he regards as his favourite course. The
37-year-old American, also the 2006 Byron Nelson Champion, also won the Louisiana Open in 2003. Wetterich was also a member of the 2006 U.S. Ryders Cup team. He finished with an overall score of 13-under 271.
"I love this place. This course just fits me perfectly," said Wetterich, "This is a great feeling. I can't be any happier. I held in there the last two days, but it certainly wasn't easy." Wetterich carded 14 splendid birdies and two even pars to gain lead
over Echavarria.
"It was fun to have a chance to win a Nationwide Tour event, especially with a player [Wetterich] that I grew up watching," Echavarria said. "It's amazing. I had a pretty good shot and missed a couple of short putts, but its golf. It happens. I'm really
pleased with my result."
Wetterich, a three times winner on the Nationwide Tour, was unable to gain an entry in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill this week. He fully capitalised on the Chitimacha Louisiana Open to regain a full PGA Tour status for 2012. Wetterich was badly
hit by consecutive injuries in the past and this win at the Louisiana Open will definitely go a long way in getting his career back on track.
Echavarria ended up with 67 in the final round with Bubba Dickerson trailing him for third place with a 69. John Kimbell , Carl Paulson and Rich Barceló settled for the fourth place scoring 10-under. Echavarria will now be preparing for the Southeastern
conference and NCAA Championship.
New Zealand’s Danny Lee also registered his best performance with a 6-under for 65. The 20-year-old tied for the seventh place with a 9-under 275 in the $500,000 Championship, marking his first top ten finish on the American circuit. Lee, the former United
States Amateur Champion, ended four shots behind Wetterich. American John Kimbell also played considerably well to move from 48th place to fourth on the final day with 10-under for 67.
