American Chris Kirk leads after round two of Shell Houston Open – Golf news
Chris Kirk smashed a score of 3-under-par 69 in the second round of the $5.9 million-Shell Houston Open, which is in progress at the par-72 Redstone Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
The Professional Golfers Association Tour event has 500 FedEx points on stake.
The 25-year-old American teed off from the back and birdied at the first hole after three greens. He proceeded to the next hole with a driver, but could not utilise it properly, as the fog had made the landing area invisible.
Kirk hit the driver on the par-3 14th hole, but the ball missed the green and landed in the bunker on the side. He then wedged the ball out onto the green, but could not save the par. However, on the immediate hole, Kirk countered off the loss
and wrapped the back with a score of one-under par.
As Kirk marched towards the front, the fog faded away and the wind became stronger, making the conditions a little favourable for the long hitter. Kirk, who hails from Knoxville, attacked the pin on the second hole and succeeded in carding a birdie. He repeated
the action on the next hole and once again, relished success.
Soon after, Kirk hit a tee shot against the wind with a driver, which caught a bunker on the left side of the fairway. He tried to hit from the bottom to reach the green, but the wind stopped the shot and the ball dropped few inches away from the greenside
bunker. Kirk three-putted and signed for a double bogey seven.
Unable to counter off the huge loss, Kirk decided to play safe and left the next three holes for the par. However, as he approached closer to the clubhouse which was located near the 18th green, Kirk decided to take another risk and hit some crisp
iron shots on the fairways of the last two holes and succeeded in adding twin birdies on the front nine.
He capped the day with an aggregate of 9-under par and relished 86.1 per cent success rate in Green Hits in Regulation.
