My son was born in New Zealand and is both Kiwi and American. Anyway long story short when I went to register him with the conuslate in Auckland they made his passport and made his birth abroad thingie and both say he's a female. I didn't even notice this until I had to get them out for school. I tried calling the folks up in Washington and they said it was a consulate problem in auckland and they wont return our calls. What in the world do I do? Where do I start? Thank heavens they accepted the NZ birth certificate

  1. If you're in NZ - go to the US Consulate in Auckland and have them issue a new passport and get it right.

If you're in the USA - go to the nearest Post Office and fill out the form to get a new Passport.

  2. As silly as this answer might sound it may be a good idea even at this late stage to get your doctor to make a written statement confirming that your son is male.

This will stop officials thinking there is something strange about your boy since I assume he is now at an age where he would not appreciate demonstrating his gender openly.

  3. I am assuming that the birth certificate listed the s*x of the baby correctly.  Take the birth certificate and go back to the consulate explaining the whole issue and ask them to re-issue the passport.  It is their fault, they should correct it without you having to incur additional expenses.  If they do not want to cooperate tell them you will file a complaint with an embassy.

  4. well, contact the nearest passport office and ask. check out travel.state.gov and look in the passport section for the various regional offices. You could also contact the consulate and send a copy of the birth certificate and ask for a corrected CRBA.

  5. buy him a dress

  6. Contact the media - even bureaucrats get more reasonable in a spotlight.
