American David Toms secures halfway lead at the Players Championship in Florida – Golf news
American David Toms posted a four under par 68 to grab second round lead of the Players Championship taking place at the TPC Sawgrass in Florida.
The 44-year-old rose from the ashes and is hoping to end his five-year winless streak by winning the world’s richest tournament. Adding on to his opening 66, Toms is leading at ten under par overall.
Toms started off well making a birdie on the fifth hole. He was doing well as he birdied the seventh hole only to follow with a bogey on the eighth hole. He quickly recovered after birdying the next hole and made the turn at two under par. The back-nine
were more impressive as he posted a birdie on the 11th and 13th holes. Making another bogey on the 15th, Toms carded a birdie on the 16th hole and is one shot ahead of Nick Watney.
“I haven't done anything great, haven't made a lot of putts, or chip-ins or anything like that. I've just played very, very solid golf,” said Toms who was surprised to be on top of the leader board. “It's all about enjoying the game, enjoying the competition
and if you get the results, that is a bonus as well.”
Toms has won 12 times on the Professional Golfers Association Tour but has not done well of late. His wins also include the major, PGA Championship.
The golf course actually looks like a battleground between the Europeans and the Americans. With top stars of Europe like PGA winner Martin Kaymer and US Open champion Graeme McDowell playing well, the competition is getting intense. McDowell is playing
really after posting an opening 67 and a 69 in the second round. He is two shots off the pace and is tied for third place with three other players.
Luke Donald, Lucas Glover and Steve Stricker are all in third place and in contention of winning the tournament.
With so many talented names near the top of the leader board, the Players Championship is keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
