American DeMarcus Corley knocks out British Paul McCloskey in 10th round – Boxing news
DeMarcus Corley, the former NABF light welterweight champion, is back on the win track and collected an impressive 10th round technical knockout win over Paul McCloskey, the former EBU (European) light welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout held on May
5, 2012.
The duo met at the Kings Hall arena situated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom and the pay-per-view was promoted by Barry Hearn of Matchroom Boxing. Corley and McCloskey headlined the event whereas the non-title bout between Martin Lindsay and
Mickey Coveney co-headlined the Saturday night showdown.
Corley, 37, is a veteran who was entering in his 59th bout. The American proud boasted 38 wins, 22 of them via knockout. Widely known as the ‘Chop Chop’, DeMarcus was coming from an impressive unanimous decision win over Gabriel Bracero and grabbed the NABF
light welterweight title.
Before that the veteran was going through the toughest time of his career since he collected six consecutive losses and most of them against young emerging pugilists. His comeback win over Gabriel was considered as a good omen for him and he did prove in
his recent fight that he is ready to secure the top position in the division.
His opponent, Paul, 32, got famous when he skimmed the Amir Khan-loss effect off his resume by collecting a 12-round unanimous decision win over Breidis Prescott. It was hypothecated that he will put up a great fight and give the veteran a tough time of
his career.
Paul, also known as the ‘Dudey’, did do so and rattled Corley several times but at the end of the day it was the more experienced DeMarcus who knocked out Paul in the tenth round.
McCloskey was in his 25th bout and boasted 23 wins with 12 of them via knockout. After the flawless performance and an epic win, Corley shared his thoughts during a media interaction and commented, “I thought the stoppage may have been premature because
he likes to play possum, trick you into thinking he’s hurt then bite right back.”
While admitting his opponent’s abilities, DeMarcus remarked, “I rocked him a lot and that was tough because he’s hard to it and a really strong guy – he can bounce back but tonight was my night, I was confident I could do it and I’m confident I can fight
for a world title again.”
Paul, on the other hand, praised Corley for his top-notch performance and stated, “I will have to sit down and figure out what went wrong. But you have to give DeMarcus a bit of credit. He is a quality operator. His record might tell a different story but
he is a quality fighter.”
With this win DeMarcus has collected his second consecutive win after six-bout loss streak whereas Paul has received his second career defeat and first ever by knockout.
