American Express Gift card not working online, Keep getting error. What is wrong?

Im trying to buy a t shirt online from a website but when i check out it says "Error card processing failed, this transaction has been cancelled" What is wrong?

You need to contact American Expess. It's possible that the card wasn't activated correctly.
