  1. Once the industrial revolution began, the US suddenly had a broader interest in the world at large.  We suddenly needed products that we could ship from other countries, and we were producing products that we could send to other countries.  So it was economic.  When you start sending ships across the ocean to other countries, you will eventually need the means to protect those ships.  So you build your navy and send it out all over the world.  You develop trade pacts with other countries.  This leads to international coalitions, which to leads to being allies.  The rest is only natural.  The friend of my friend is my friend, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, etc.

Isolationism doesn't work for larger, industrialized countries.

    Hope that helps!
