American Hannah Jun grabs an outright lead at the opening round of Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open
A comparatively unknown player on the Ladies European Tour (LET) circuit is now leading the latest Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland at the Archerfield Links in East Lothian. Ranked number 237th in the world, American Hannah
Jun posted a bogey-free round of six-under, 66 on the first day to grab the lead from established LET players including England's Rebecca Hudson and Ashleigh Simon of South Africa.
“I made some really big changes while I was home: changed my set up, the line on my ball, everything really. It’s the same putter. It wasn’t the arrow, it was the Indian,” Jun said. “I love this golf course. The layout suits my eye.”
Jun’s best performance in the season came in the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco, where she finished for a joint 11th. The 26-year-old originally hails from Korea and frequently travels around the world on tourneys along with her parents. Jun also
speaks three languages which gives her distinct advantage to quickly blend in with different players and their caddies from all over the world.
Jun was not able to grab any ordinary lead on the first day. After calling it a day on the 18th, she later found out that she had been leading the event with a staggering three shots despite of the fact that a full LET contingent is in attendance.
Hudson and Simon dropped their shots at the 17th to fall behind the player. Catriona Mathew and Caroline Alfonso are further down the leaderboard with their respective scores of two-under, trailing Jun by four shots.
Simon said while speaking to the press, “Three under is always a good steady start to the round. I only had two drops out there. Unfortunately I finished with a drop which isn’t really great, but a good round, nevertheless.”
Caroline Masson of Germany, the leading LET player, fell for a disappointing first day posting first round score of one-under, 71. Diana Luna, Beck Brewerton, Lydia Hall and another six players settled for a even par on the first day.
Most of the players on the event are pitched in a fierce battle to gather enough points to make it into the Solheim Cup scheduled later in September this year.
